MCM on Plum Island Sound

Contemporary

Coastal

Pursuing a dream since childhood to live in a mid-century modern home, our client and longtime friend thought the answer was in purchasing a water damaged, tear-down cottage on Great Neck, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Transitioning to the client’s design ideas, the BNA team, and the client (herself an interior design professional) created a two – level home that blends into the slope of the site – complete with a nautically inspired gang plank bringing guests to the front door. A living room wall of glass provides a stunning view of Plum Island Sound.

The client, a friend from Ben’s childhood days, had always dreamed of designing and living in a mid-century modern home. Purchasing a water damaged, tear-down cottage on Great Neck, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, she and her husband initially chose to work with two other architects. These efforts did not result in creating a design that met their desires. A mutual friend kept saying repeatedly “Work with Ben,” but the client was worried it might impact their friendship. Friendship and expertise won over and after describing what she wanted, BNA started with CAD technology to create a 3D site model that visually describes the challenging slope that drops down to Plum Island Sound. Transitioning to the client’s design ideas, the BNA team, and the client (herself an interior design professional) created a two – level home that blends with the slope of the site while achieving their desired space needs. A gently sloped nautically inspired gang plank brings guests to the front door. As one enters the main living space, they are welcomed with a stunning view of Plum Island Sound that is framed by a wall of glass. This 20’ x 12’ glazed area provides extraordinary sunrises and sunsets. The home is net - zero. And the clients, avid boaters each, enjoy setting off from their dock for sea faring adventures along the Northshore coastline.

Project Deliverables

“I had a vision for our house that Ben’s eye, experience, and attention to detail made into a reality exceeding what I had imagined. BNA’s willingness to listen to my design ideas and work with me, rather than just taking over and doing their own thing, not only made for a house we are delighted with, but also made the design process a joy. BNA helped us find the right contractors, who were also willing to try new things to get the right look. They also helped us navigate the challenges that come with building in a tight space and on a steeply sloping lot, and the one-off problems that inevitably come with building a new house, always bringing practical and timely solutions to keep our project on track. We couldn’t be happier!”
