Plum Island Oceanfront

Contemporary

Coastal

With Naval influences, BNA built a resilient oceanfront design on Plum Island – a Northeast barrier beach known for taking on monster storms with extreme high tides and winds. Dubbed "Steelhenge" during construction due to its robust steel framework, the home reflects the owner’s extensive U.S. Navy background, complete with a bow-like ocean-facing façade.

Naval Influence: A Resilient Oceanfront Design

Originally, Benjamin Nutter Architects collaborated withJohn and Irene Kucinski on an addition to their Colonial Revival home in Danvers, Massachusetts. In 2012, however, they embarked on an entirelydifferent journey—a contemporary oceanfront home on Plum Island, on the seacoast of Boston’s North Shore. Initially, the Kucinskis assumed BNA specialized only in traditional homes and asked for recommendations for contemporary architects. Once they realized BNA could bring their modern vision to life, they fully embraced the design process and BNA jumped in.

This project came with significant challenges, particularly strict zoning and coastal regulations that limited the home to just 1,440 square feet. Every inch of space became invaluable, and every room was designed to maximize breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding dune grasses. While the restrictions were limiting, they also provided design cues that guided the home’s shape, placement, and final architectural solutions.

Steelhenge: A Fortress Against the Elements

Dubbed "Steelhenge" during construction due to its robust steel framework, the home reflects owner John’s extensive naval background (he’s a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor’s in Ocean Engineering, and a Master’s in civil engineering from MIT) —complete with a bow-like ocean-facing façade. Though modest in size, the home’s 1,800 square feet of exterior decks more than compensate, providing expansive outdoor living space. From the rooftop "Flight Deck," one can take in a 360-degree panoramic view, while the "Control Tower" offers the best vantage point during storms. At night, LED perimeter lighting creates a striking beacon visible from the sea.

Built with superior construction techniques, the home is a testament to resilience. In recent years, Plum Island has experienced severe barrier beach erosion, with multiple homes lost to 40-foot waves and 70-mph winds. Despite relentless coastal flooding, high tides, and extreme winter storms, the Kucinski home remains unshaken—a steadfast guardian of the sea.
