Aging in Place from an architectural design perspective refers to creating or modifying homes and buildings to accommodate the changing needs of individuals as they grow older. The goal is to allow people to live safely, comfortably, and independently in their own homes for as long as possible, without the need for relocation due to age-related challenges. At BNA, we like to refer to this as creating your “Forever Home” design.
We ask, "what do you – what will you possibly – need to thrive in place?"
1. Universal Design – Incorporating elements that work for people of all ages and abilities, such as no-step entrances, lever-style door handles, and wider doorways.
2. Accessibility – Ensuring spaces are wheelchair-friendly, with wider hallways, barrier-free bathrooms, and lowered countertops.
3. Safety Enhancements – Non-slip flooring, grab bars, well-lit stairways, and smart home technology for monitoring and security.
4. Single-Level Living – Minimizing or eliminating stairs by designing ranch-style homes or providing first-floor living options.
5. Adaptability & Flexibility – Features like adjustable countertops, curb-less showers, and removable cabinets that allow spaces to evolve with a resident’s needs.
6. Smart Home Integration – Voice-activated controls, automated lighting, and remote monitoring systems to support independence.
7. Enhanced Lighting & Visibility – Task lighting, motion-activated lights, and high-contrast design for improved visibility.
8. Comfort & Convenience – Easily accessible storage, wider passageways, and ergonomic kitchen and bathroom designs.
