Multigenerational Living

Inspired by connected New England farmhouses, this residence was designed for multiple generations. Set on a wooded site, the exterior was detailed to respect the Georgian homes of Cape Ann. Careful consideration with exterior detailing respects the proportions of 17th century homes, while accommodating the ceiling heights desired in the 21st century. While the interior also embraces details of this architectural period, there are playful features that reflect a 21st century lifestyle. One of these is the “bridge” that connects the two ends of the second floor to each other above the kitchen. This allows the owners to enjoy some privacy from the bedrooms that accommodate their grandchildren, yet they are still just a few steps away. There is a craft room for the wife, a bike repair shop for the husband, and a home gym for each of them. The favorite story shared by the wife was a comment by a delivery man. Dropping off a package, he said “You have done such a fine job restoring this old house, but I do not remember it being here.” To which she replied “It wasn’t. We just finished building it.” Timeless design. Contemporary living. Perhaps our finest example?
