Rick Bernard, senior architect at Benjamin Nutter Architects

Rick Bernard, AIA, NCARB

Senior Architect

Licensed in MA and NH

For 24 years, Rick’s design philosophy combines traditional architectural roots with modern techniques and contemporary style. Organized and detail oriented, he enjoys working closely with his clients, focusing on their needs. Reducing our impact on the environment through design is a priority. His knowledge of construction, and background in energy-efficient design are the foundation of his success as an architect. He advanced this knowledge by completing the Certified Passive House Consultant course a decade ago. Innovative, creative, and with a steady calm approach, Rick embraces any challenge. He has a strong partnership with Ben, and is an overall great team player, and a beneficial mentor to younger staff members.

Rick’s love for design developed in high school with a variety of drafting and design classes. One of his favorite memories is designing and building a castle out of Styrofoam for the backdrop of his prom, which received national recognition. After high school, Rick earned his Bachelor of Architecture and Associate in Architectural Engineering Technology degrees from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and began working for BNA upon graduation in 2001. Community service is something Rick is passionate about. He has mentored high school design students at his alma mater, Pinkerton Academy, for over 15 years. He is a member of the AIANH chapter’s Education Committee spearheading the New Hampshire High School Design Challenge and is on the Scholarship Committee helping future local architects. He serves on the advisory board for Pinkerton’s CTE Architecture and Design program, serves on the Pinkerton Alumni Association and was inducted into the Pinkerton Hall of Fame in 2018. Recently, he joined the Hampstead Recreation Board and spent over 10 years coaching youth softball and baseball in his town.

Rick and his family are rooted in southern New Hampshire, where his wife, Amy, is a Middle School Principal. Their two children have grown up participating in sports, dance, karate, music, school organizations and community service as well. The family enjoys escaping to northern New Hampshire when time allows. A lifelong Boston sports fan and athlete, Rick continues to play baseball and stays in shape by running with Amy, an accomplished marathoner. When he’s not on the diamond or roads, he enjoys completing home carpentry projects or working on his skills as a home chef.
