Ben Nutter, AIA, has been practicing residential and commercial architecture for more than five decades. A native of Topsfield, Massachusetts, Ben graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Architecture. He trained in the esteemed architectural firm of Royal Barry Wills Associates, Boston, for five years. The renowned Royal Barry Wills firm was widely considered to be the master of New England’s Colonial Revival style. After his time at Royal Barry Wills, Ben joined the architecture and construction firm of Lindentree Corporation, in Hamilton, MA. He was a project architect and responsible for the design and construction management of a wide variety of residential and commercial projects.

Ben is celebrating his 40th year in business with Benjamin Nutter Architects (BNA) and is highly regarded for creating timeless designs and contemporary living for residential and commercial properties. With a range of architectural styles from Traditional to Contemporary, a key concept to Ben’s success has been what he refers to as “clarity of style,” meaning the ability to implement a style throughout all aspects of the design. He believes sustainability comes in many forms whether new construction, a renovation, or in its original form, restoration and preservation. Ben leads the BNA Team though his passion for a collaborative approach to the design and construction process, working daily on site and in-studio with clients and allied professionals. His work is found throughout New England and has been profiled in various books and media outlets and has received numerous awards.

Ben is a keen conservationist, community advocate, and an inspiring leader through mentorship. Over the 40 years, BNA has championed over 50 interns, now in professional careers of their own. Dedicating decades to North Shore non-profits and participating in local municipal preservation efforts, Ben was a member of the Topsfield Town Hall Building Committee for 20 years. He has been a board member and is the current Vice Chairman of Windrush Farm – Therapeutic Equitation, Inc. BNA has been a corporate sponsor of the Essex County Trails Association, Greenbelt – Essex County’s Land Trust, and the Ipswich River Watershed Association.

From a strong New England ancestry, Ben grew up on the Nutter Farm in Topsfield, which remains in his family today. Ben’s father was an engineer and his mother a talented arborist with an eye for landscape design. These influences can be found in his longtime advocacy of regionally inspired architecture and commitment to environmentally sensitive design. In addition to his passion for architecture, Ben enjoys staying active. When not behind the desk, he continues his life-long enthusiasm for alpine skiing in the winter and biking around the North Shore in the summer.
